Paper Charts

Overview

The Australian Hydrographic Office (AHO) Aus Paper Chartspublishes and updates official paper nautical charts. We have no plans to stop producing paper charts. They remain available for purchase through our network of Distribution Agents.

Coverage includes:

  • Australian, Timor Leste and Australian Antarctic Territory waters published as 'Aus' charts
  • Papua New Guinea waters published as ‘PNG’ charts
  • Solomon Islands waters published as 'SLB' charts

For details, visit our AHO Chart Explorer or Australian Chart Index.

Selected AHO published paper charts are reproduced by the UK Hydrographic Office in their world-wide Admiralty chart series. AHO published charts within the Admiralty chart series are easily identified by their 'Aus', ‘PNG’ and 'SLB' chart numbers.

CARRIAGE REQUIREMENTS

AHO paper nautical charts are official products published by the AHO, Australia’s national charting authority as authorised under the Navigation Act 2012.

It is extremely important that all chart users keep their paper nautical charts up-to-date for the latest safety-critical information to meet chart carriage requirements and to keep your vessel and personnel safe.

Australian paper nautical charts are updated by fortnightly Australian Notices to Mariners (NtM) Editions. However, in extreme circumstances an AUSTCOAST warning may be issued by the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA).

Comprehensive instructions on how to update paper nautical charts for NtM updates can be found in the Chart & Publication Maintenance Handbook. Detailed descriptions of ZOC categories can be found in the Mariner's Handbook for Australian Waters.

For more information about the use of paper nautical charts in Australian waters, see our Fact Sheets or Paper Charting Information.
